We started Free Range with the goal of offering skin care that respects your body and the systems that support it. This page explains what we’re currently doing to reduce harm — and the things we’re still working on.

Circularity spotlight
Aluminum tins:
Aluminum is infinitely recyclable, meaning it maintains its integrity despite recycling. We only use aluminum packaging that is readily recyclable.
Ingredient lifecycle matters:
We're starting to map the full lifecycle of every ingredient — from soil health to how easily it biodegrades. Most of our ingredients are either food-grade or naturally decomposing oils and waxes.
Tallow, a circular ingredient:
We use grass-fed, pasture-raised tallow — a byproduct of the meat industry that would otherwise be discarded. By turning it into skincare, we’re creating value from waste and supporting regenerative ranchers who raise animals on healthy land.
Climate concerns:
We set out to create a brand that does not add to noise of capital consumerism but is net-positive. To do this, we value leading by example and setting goals that are both bold and realistic. By 2026, we plan for total carbon neutrality.
Our Sourcing
Our Grass-Fed, Grass Finished Beef Tallow is USA origin, organic and food-grade.
Our MCT Oil originates in Malaysia & Indonesia - we ensure ethical sourcing free of labor violations. Kosher Certified.
Our Jojoba Oil is sustainably sourced primarily from Israel - a drought resistant crop that is non-toxic and requires little water.
Our Mango Butter is sustainable within a closed loop system (mango seeds are often a waste product) and comes from ethical labor in India.
Our Prickly Pear Oil is another drought-resistant botanical that fights aridification and regenerates soils in Morocco.
Our Candelilla Wax is sourced in the USA and is a sustainable choice resilient in dry climates of the Southwest.
Our Sweet Orange is derived in Brazil and is closed-loop sustainable via use of orange peels, a typical waste product.
Our Rosemary Oil is grown in the USA and another arid sustainable choice. Kosher certified.
We fill our tins in San Antonio, Texas in an FDA-clean facility.
Built In Sustainability
Multi-use, not one-off:
Our balm is designed to be used everywhere — face, lips, hands, heels. That means fewer products in your cabinet, fewer purchases over time, and less waste overall.
Small batches, local fulfillment:
We produce in small runs to avoid overstock and fulfill orders in NY, WI and MT. It takes more work, but it keeps our footprint lighter and waste lower.
Packaging designed to last:
Our balm jars are aluminum — durable, recyclable, and designed to be reused. In fact, 75% of all aluminum in circulation is reused!
Long shelf life, fewer toss-outs:
We use antioxidant-rich oils (like rosemary extract) instead of synthetic preservatives. Our formulas are shelf-stable for 12+ months, so you’re less likely to throw out half-used product.
Sourcing with soil in mind:
We favor suppliers who prioritize soil health and regenerative practices — especially for our tallow and plant oils. Healthy soils capture more carbon, reduce erosion, and support biodiversity.
Ingredient-first:
We formulate around ingredients that are gentle on your skin and the environment. That means choosing oils and butters with low land and water use, like jojoba and algae oil, and using tallow, which requires no additional farming

For people and planet, alike
Sourcing from low-risk regions
We prioritize ingredients grown and processed in countries with strong labor protections and low incidence of forced or child labor. For example, our jojoba oil and tallow are sourced from trusted U.S. partners, and our candelilla wax originates in the U.S.
Small-scale, not exploitative
We choose to minimize the scale of our operations to the minimum viable size in an effort to reduce excess. This helps support producer livelihoods while reducing the risk of exploitative labor conditions.
Formulated and filled close to home
Our balm is formulated and packaged in the U.S. by teams working under fair labor laws. From the kitchen to the warehouse, we make sure people are paid fairly and treated with dignity.
